What is a Search Engine and what is it's purpose?

Search engines are sites like Google, AOL, MSN or Yahoo where searches for information on the Internet are conducted. Searches are conducted by typing keywords or key phrases into the search box and then reviewing the results.

Search engine optimization is the process of getting a website ranked in the top search engine results under certain keywords. For example, if you own a business that sells holistic products in Aberdeen, you would probably want to rank well when a searcher typed in “holistic products Aberdeen” in the keyword box. If you run a charity that provides international aid to hungry children, you may want to be in the top ten results when a searcher typed in “children's charities” or “international charity.”

I thought a search engine always produced the most relevant results to my queries?

Yes and No. Unfortunately, having a good website is not enough. Why? Search engines look for very specific information such as: the content (text) and the underlying code and of the website. If the search engine doesn’t find what it’s looking for, the search engine will most often not recognize your site as being relevant. Search engines must attempt to sort over 30 million domains and, of course, each of these domains can have dozens of pages. The fact is, search engines are doing the best they can to return relevant results, but the fact that they must have criteria by which to sort these results creates a need for search engine optimization.

What is a domain name?

What does it mean to register a domain name?
To preserve order on the Internet, and to ensure that no two people ever own the same domain name. The Internet domain name system (DNS) consists of a directory, organized hierarchically, of all the domain names and their corresponding computers registered to particular companies and persons using the Internet. When you register a domain name, it will be associated with the computer on the Internet you designate during the period the registration is in effect. From that computer, you can create a website which will be accessible to Internet users around the world.

What is the Domain Name System?
The Domain Name System (DNS) helps users to find their way around the Internet. Every computer on the Internet has a unique address - just like a telephone number - which is a rather complicated string of numbers. It is called its "IP address" (IP stands for "Internet Protocol"). IP Addresses are hard to remember.

When you wish to transfer from one hosting company to another this IP address is changed in your control panel to the new hosting company servers IP address.

No, this is a standard practice now. You have to visit the site and confirm your details as you first registered them. This enables you to receive your certificate of ownership, as well as a login and password for the future in case you need to make any amendments such as a new address.

However, if you do receive any emails or letters from anyone other than your domain registrar, myself or Nominet, then please contact me immediately they could possibly be scammers tricking you into registering with them.
